Working Group 2

Services & Service Architectures

The Services & Service Architectures Working Group (WG2) is a working group within the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF). The working groups exist to gather inputs and views from industry and academia, to synthesise these views, to influence future visions and research priorities, and to share results across the forum.

Working Group 2 has worked especially in the area of service architectures and service platforms for future wireless systems. It has become clear that there are several approaches to develop and operate a service infrastructure depending on the role of the service provider/operator.

But more notable the definition of the term service itself has changed over the years, starting from simple communication services (like phone calls or SMS) towards complex scenarios like interactive portals for social networks or seamless provisioning of information during travels. The broader the service notion gets the more difficult it is to provide a single approach to fulfil the desired functionality for both, the providers as well as the end-users.

Therefore, WG2 concentrates on the aspects arising from the different notions of services starting from the definition itself, tackling service semantics and service creation up to needed architectures and building-blocks to setup service provisioning platforms for the future communication systems (investigated in WG3).

WG2 keeps the user as a driving force for the creation and design of new, emerging services, following the approach of WG1 (Human Perspective). From the users’ needs WG2 investigates and studies which elements in a service architecture are needed to model individuals and communities, their preferences, and how to build the targeted services upon that. In order to enable everybody to build services, WG2 researches ways to make the service creation environments flexible enough to cover the changing nature of the service definition and desired target groups of upcoming services. The targeted architectures and mechanisms need to be designed in such a way, that the users are able to trust the system, and no misuse in terms of privacy of the provided information will and can be done (together with WG7).

WG2 derives recommendations how future service provisioning systems can assemble these features supporting the full service life-cycle and therefore involving all parties of the business chain.
