Charter

Working group 2 starts from the observation that the notion “of what a service is and might be” has changed over the years and is subject to change with every new technology wave (like the rise of Web2.0).

Looking into the service oriented environments two major approaches have evolved, the telco-centric service provisioning paradigm and the Web2.0 driven paradigm. While these approaches are dealing with completely different assumptions about the users and related business aspects, their interaction, interoperation, and cooperation is becoming ever more important and requires joint future research and development. Beside these two approaches new application areas for service driven environments are emerging, for example Car2X, Home Entertainment, digital broadcast/interactive TV all with different semantics and requirements towards the supporting and underlying systems.

From this background, the WWRF working group 2 focuses on research issues in defining and bridging existing service definitions, enablers and architectures. Beyond that several issues in domain specific approaches will be highlighted and investigated with the premier focus of merging existing stand-alone solutions into a common service provisioning approach. Examples include, but are not limited to, service semantics, ambient-awareness, user profiling/modelling, profile federation, DLNA, IMS and privacy-management (together with SIG2.

The type of work ranges from conceptual work on the structure of architectures over description and notation techniques (e.g. architecture description techniques), deployment enablers (e.g. service life-cycle management), specific enablers (e.g. ambient awareness, profiling) and evaluation techniques (e.g. how to setup interconnected Service Execution Environments).
